‘The Artist’ Named Film of the Year By Capri, Hollywood – The International Film Festival

The festival, which is the last film festival of each year and the first of the following year, got underway Dec. 26.

Among the festival’s highlights: Ben Kingsley was given the festival’s Legends career honor; Emanuele Crialese, was given the Capri Peace prize for his work as the director of Terrafirma, Italy’s candidate for the foreign language Oscar this year; and Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist was selected as the film of the year.

Fassbender, on Capri to receive the fesival’s best actor prize for his work as the sex addicted protagonist in Steve McQueen’s Shame, was one of the hits of the festival. Shame won the Coppa Volpi award at this year’s Venice Film Festival, but its Capri appearance is its last in Italy before its Jan. 13 opening across the country.

Organizers said that Marilyn caused a great buzz in it’s Italian premier, with the festival’s honorary head, Lina Wertmueller declaring the film had the best overall cast of any film that screened at the festival.

Wertmueller is best known to film buffs as the first woman ever nominated for a Best Director Oscar.
